Sustainability and the MTA

Thanks in large part to the MTA, the energy consumption and CO2 output of New Yorkers is approximately a quarter of the national average. By improving, and expanding these efficiencies, the MTA can serve as a national model and regional platform for sustainable growth in the 21st century. The challenge for the MTA is to continue to provide the environmental benefits of mass transportation while reducing and managing our own carbon footprint. Increased use of clean renewable fuels, conservation of water and energy and strategies for climate adaptation will position the MTA as a leader in this context.
