Female Track Worker in Steinway Tunnel
fall update Click here for update
on last weekend's work

Last spring, to improve the reliability and performance of the 7line icon line, we began critical maintenance and infrastructure work in the more than century-old Steinway Tunnel, which links Manhattan and Queens and began installing a new signal system known as Communications Based Train Control (CBTC).  While maintenance in the tunnel is ongoing, our accomplishments so far include:

  • installation of 8,000 track plates
  • cleaning of more than 9,600 feet of track
  • rewired track circuit and signals
  • serviced pump equipment and cleared drains
  • installed 8,000 feet of fiber optic cable
  • replaced switch, rail and power components
Substantial work remains, however, and this means continued 7line icon line service changes for several years. When completed, CBTC will result in more reliable service, more frequent service and countdown clocks. We realize this is an inconvenience and changes the way you travel, but the work is necessary for the modernization and improvement in the line’s reliability.
