Last spring, to improve the reliability and performance of the
line, we began critical maintenance and infrastructure work in the more than century-old Steinway Tunnel, which links Manhattan and Queens and began installing a new signal system known as Communications Based Train Control (CBTC). While maintenance in the tunnel is ongoing, our accomplishments so far include:
- installation of 8,000 track plates
- cleaning of more than 9,600 feet of track
- rewired track circuit and signals
- serviced pump equipment and cleared drains
- installed 8,000 feet of fiber optic cable
- replaced switch, rail and power components
