Eye on the Future
Letter from the Chairman and CEO
Welcome to the latest MTA "Eye on the Future," in which we present capital projects that are planned to be advertised from March 2012 through September 2012. The "Eye" is hosted on our recently launched MTA Capital Program web site. This new site assembles key information and resources about the Capital Program in one convenient location. It is another part of how we are changing the way we do business and we hope that you find it to be useful.
The MTA Capital Program is not only very important for the safety and reliability of the MTA transportation system; it also is vital to the regional economy. As described in this issue of the "Eye," the MTA is preparing to undertake approximately $3.2 billion in capital work that spans many areas, including civil, structural, and electrical, as well as new technologies. This work is part of the overall capital program that, based on the October 2009 APTA publication on the Economic Impact of Public Transportation Investments, is projected to create more than 76 thousand jobs and generate more than $13 billion in economic activity for the New York region.
The 2010-2014 Capital Plan currently does not have fully approved funding. In anticipation of securing funding, we are continuing to solicit for 2012 projects; however, unfunded projects will not be awarded until funding is in place. We have noted which projects are affected. The MTA has put forth a funding proposal for these and other projects in the last three years of the Capital Plan, which will require approval from Albany. Given the importance of the program to the reliability and growth of the system and to the regional economy, we hope to secure funding approval.
Contractors and suppliers have a critical stake in the success of the Capital Program. We appreciate your interest in and support of the projects included in this issue of the "Eye" and their importance to the transit system and the region.
Yours truly,
Joseph J. Lhota
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
